Poetry At Dikeou with Bill Rector and his guest reader, Andrew Allport

Friday, June 20th, 7pm, Free

Bill Rector is a physician practicing in Denver whose poems have appeared in a variety of literary journals. About his recent book, bill, Mark Irwin says, though unassuming, almost pedestrian, [the title] is pregnant with meaning, for Bill is not only a proper noun and name, but as signifier it throws us into the American world of capitalism, one of dollar bills, bills of sale Ñor that less than responsible phrase, ÒBill me,Ó which moves democratically throughout our world, including the world of medicine... There is a wonderful range of emotion in these landscapes, portraits of mortality, and self-portraits. The art of distraction and a keen sense of peripheral vision must certainly be admired... for if the physician survives the deaths of others through compassion and forms of distraction, then the poet thrives through that same distraction ÑI mean more specifically the art of seeing the many in the one, one also filled with compassion.

Andrew Allport is a graduate student in the Literature & Creative Writing Program at the University of Southern California. His poetry and essays appear or are forthcoming in Crate, The Antioch Review, Colorado Review, and Denver Quarterly. He is the winner of the Proem Press chapbook award for his collection The Ice Ship & Other Vessels.
