Juan Gomez makes his drawings/gouaches quickly and spontaneously. Poetically, they follow a European tradition popularized by Modern masters like Courbe, Manet, and Picasso, and allude to Contemporary photography traditions of Mapplethorpe and Richard Kern. By adapting life scenarios and recording the muse, Gomez documents sexual interaction, both metaphysically and literally. The gesture and line are as important as the captured moments -- whether frenzied or calm, solipsistic or engaging, these drawings are mesmerizing. It goes without saying what the subject matter addresses, but more importantly, once a viewer recognizes the content, he recognizes the beauty that transpires from pure inspiration. Gomez' drawings appeared in issue #10 of zingmagazine under the same title: "Share." Devon Dikeou |
